The Psychology of Design: How Interior Design Impacts Your Mood and Well-Being

When it comes to creating beautiful spaces, it’s not just about aesthetics. The way a room looks, feels, and flows can have a profound effect on our emotions, behaviors, and mental state. At Evelyn Eshun Design, we understand that design is more than just decoration - it’s about creating environments that enhance your well-being and make you feel your best.

The Connection Between Design and Mood

Studies show that the spaces we inhabit influence our mood, productivity, and overall mental health. Colors, lighting, furniture arrangement, and textures all play a role in shaping how we feel in a particular space. Now designers go so far as to include scent for many of their clients. Big hotels, spas, and even casinos use carefully curated scents to subtly influence the mood of their guests. Certain fragrances, like lavender for relaxation or citrus for energy, can enhance the emotional atmosphere of a room, deepening the overall sensory experience and making the space more memorable.

For example, blue is often associated with calmness and tranquility, making it perfect for bedrooms or spaces intended for relaxation. On the other hand, yellow can evoke feelings of happiness and energy, making it ideal for kitchens or creative workspaces. The right color choices can stimulate creativity, promote relaxation, or even reduce stress levels.

Uplifting Your Mood with Design

The design of your home should make you feel good - both physically and emotionally. Thoughtfully chosen design elements can uplift your spirits and create a sense of harmony. For example, an open, airy layout with plenty of natural light can improve your energy and overall sense of well-being. Spaces that feel open and free often reduce feelings of stress or anxiety and promote a sense of peace.

At Evelyn Eshun Design, we focus on creating spaces that do just that. By thoughtfully considering color schemes, furniture placement, and overall layout, we can create spaces that feel uplifting, inspiring, and emotionally enriching.

Calming Spaces for Relaxation and Rest

In contrast to lively, energizing spaces, some rooms - such as bedrooms or home offices - benefit from a design that promotes relaxation and calm. Soft, muted colors like gray, beige, or light blue paired with comfortable textures (think plush rugs, soft cushions, and cozy lighting) create a sanctuary where you can unwind and rejuvenate.

Design elements such as natural materials - wood, stone, and organic fabrics - help connect us to the natural world, which has been shown to reduce stress and increase feelings of well-being. I love to incorporate natural elements into my designs as they can create a peaceful retreat that feels grounded and restorative.

The Role of Lighting in Design

At EED, we firmly believe that lighting is one of the most important aspects of design. It directly impacts mood, stress levels, sleep, mental focus and more. Natural light has been shown to improve mood and productivity, which is why we always prioritize maximizing natural light in our designs. Adding large windows or strategically placing mirrors can help reflect light and open up the space.

On the other hand, soft, warm lighting can create a sense of coziness and intimacy, perfect for areas like living rooms or reading nooks. Adjustable lighting allows you to control the mood of the space, providing the right ambiance for any activity - whether it's a quiet evening or a vibrant gathering. For example, standard interior lights tend to be at about 3000 kelvins (daylight is 5000) but if we want to set a romantic mood, we know the lights have to be set at 2000.

The Power of Personalization

A well-designed space should also feel personal and reflective of your unique style. Adding personal touches - whether it’s family photos, favorite artwork, or meaningful heirlooms - can create a sense of belonging and comfort. When your space feels like an extension of yourself, it becomes a true sanctuary, supporting your mental and emotional well-being.

Final Thoughts: Designing for Well-Being

At Evelyn Eshun Design, we believe that interior design should always enhance your life - not just your surroundings. By considering how design elements can impact mood, we create spaces that don’t just look beautiful, but also make you feel good. Whether you need a calming retreat, an energizing workspace, or a nurturing environment, the right design choices can transform your home into a place that fosters positivity, relaxation, and joy.
